Derby Bus Station Passenger Concourse, 07-01-2017
My first visit to the current facility, and I was surprised at how close to the artists impressions the developers provided us with it actually is - apart from the Spitfire hanging from the ceiling!
While the old building was architecturally of it's time, as a bus station it was increasingly hopeless, being cramped and unsuitable for long, low floor vehicles. The passenger environment was also draughty and open, and there were ever present issues of safety with difficult driver sightlines, and uncontrolled interaction between vehicles and pedestrians. As one who was responsible for operations at the time, I was only too aware of all this.
While I left Derby before this was completed, I was involved in the planning and design, so can claim a small role in the provision of this excellent facility :)
