Heading for Stansted Airport, another former Central Trains unit, this time a three car version.
When the Central Trains franchise was split, Cross Country was gifted the Nottingam - Cardiff and Birmngham Stanstead routes, and gained all the 170s as a reuslt. East Midlands Trains inherited the local services based on Nottingham, Derby and Lincoln, together with the successful long distance Liverpool - Norwich service, but was left with the 158s which hd served the latter route since introduction in 1990. Two reasons have been mooted at different times for this split; it was felt that 100mph units were needed for the Derby - Gloucester corridor, and Stagecoach wanted fully gangwayed units for the Liverpool service wit the need to double up.
