97806, Sudbrooke Pumping Station, 22-05-1998
An awkward gronk to cop at the time! This is the Severn Tunnel emergency train, on hot standby for any issues which may have occurred in that four mile hole. Not visible from passing trains, I was fortunate in having to drive through the area on the way to Kidwelly and was able to divert to get this shot. Pity I didn't get the rest of the train though!
The loco was a class 09, formerly 09017, chosen thanks to it's higher speed than a class 08. The coach visible is 977526, rebuilt from BSK 35010. The loco was renumbered back to revenue stock in on 18-06-1998, so this may be one of the last photos of it in this guise!
The loco survives, and is now in maroon at the National Railway Mueseum at York. Perhaps more privately owned than preserved, it is used for stock movments around the complex. The emergency train was later replaced by two single car dmus, but even these have now been withdrawn.
