Nottm Community Transport 981, Upper Parliament St Nottingham, 29-07-2017
The changing face of bus travel in Nottingham is shown here. Owned by Nottingham City Council is an all-electric BYD working with Nottingham Community Transport on the "Eco-Link" service from Netherfield via Colwick Racecourse, reflecting their view that such vehicles are the way forward, while seen pulling out behind is and NCT bio-gas powered Scania, reflecting the operators' view that electrics are still not fully capable of meeting the all-day service requirements they require. Of note is that neither vehicle shown is capable of being purchased and operated on a fully commercial basis.
Given the shareholding in the latter held by the former, there may have been some robust comments in meetings behind closed doors, although that doesn't stop councillors getting their photo-ops in on launch days! Nottingham will have a clean air zone imposed on it in 2020, following issues with air quality, especially in the area around the Milton St / Parliament St junction among others. Of course, buses contribute most to this as there is little other through traffic; and the number of buses stopping and starting in the area is wholly down the to City Council's policy of reducing street space available in the city centre for buses (while allocating disproportionate space to the tram) - through both pedestrianisation such as in Market Square, or redevelopment in a bus unfriendly manner as in Trinity Square, or the reduction of bus station capacity as in Victoria and, from what I have heard, Broad Marsh - coupled with the ridiculous decision to remove controlled pedestrian crossings (including one just behind the photographer), with a continuous stream of pedestrians failing to observe the Highway Code, leading to buses standing for ages and then accelerating hard when a space does appear - the ideal mix for high emissions. However, in the eyes of certain councillors, it is all the fault of the bus, and cycling is the answer. Apparently.
